"Poised above Circular Quay, the hotel forms a civic threshold where harbour, city, and people converge."

The tower’s articulated form responds to changing views, light and its prominent setting at Circular Quay. At ground level, carefully resolved entrances, lobbies and public interfaces connect the hotel with the surrounding precinct and contribute to an active harbour edge.

Developed through a design excellence process, the tower combines an expressive architectural identity with the complex operational requirements of an international hotel.

Sandra Furtado and Peter Sullivan played leading roles in the project while at Crone, guiding its development from early planning and competition design - in collaboration with Kengo Kuma & Associates - through detailed resolution.

Following the project’s acquisition by AHW, Furtado Sullivan continued as design consultant through to tender.

“When it comes to a tactful balance between conceptual rigor and technical manoeuvrability, Sandra and Peter provided an excellent complement to Kengo Kuma & Associates, particularly for the ongoing project at One Circular Quay in Sydney.

Kengo Kuma’s architecture is widely regarded for its careful regard for materiality, as well as its nuanced relationships to nature - for a place-specific, tuned response. This relies most importantly on the level of collaboration of the team on the ground, and Furtado Sullivan in its nascent days were the perfect match.

From key details to sample reviews to consistency in architectural ideas, Sandra and Peter were the local hinge of the team, keeping Kengo Kuma & Associates connected to pivotal conversations on the ground, within the design team, the extended consultant members, and with the City of Sydney.”
